Planting trees is a carbon sequestration practice that we know about. We who live in the prairies also know that grassland is a common landscape that needs protection. Prairie grasslands store billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide in their soil, playing a critical role in the mitigation of climate change, yet over 80 per cent of Canada’s grasslands have been lost. They are the single most threatened ecosystem in Canada. Read about the work based at the University of Alberta that is promoting management to care for range land in the prairies.
